How was the Troop Formed |
How does the Troop support Scouting |
What
do we do different from other Troops |
Troop
87 was formed in 2002 with just 6 scouts under 1st class in rank
and 6 adults.
The reason for forming a new Troop was to create a safe
environment for our scouts to experience all that scouting has to
offer.
This turned out to be very successful with 13 Eagle scouts now and
6 more scouts about to earn their Eagles as well.
How
often do you meet and how often do you camp
Our
Troop has roughly 4 meetings a month. Our first meeting of
the month is our PLC. This is a planning meeting for all
patrol leaders in our Troop, to come together and work on the next
month's plans for in the meeting and at campouts.
For our campouts, we camp about 10 to 11 months out of the
year. We normally take August off to just do a day trip.
We attend boy Summer Camps and Winter Camps.
|
Our
Troop works hard to support our District and Council by hosting
events with in our own Phoenix District, Iron Horse District and
Council events like the 100 Years in Scouting being held at
the Minute Maid Park. By supporting District and
Council events, we help make a stronger program not only for our
Troop, but for other Units that are in attendance.
By supporting our Cub Scout units, we help ensure a stronger
program for the Cub Scout Packs. With a stronger Cub Scout
Pack, the dens will retain more boys and when it comes time for
Webelos to cross over into Boy Scouts, there will be greater
number of scouts to experience the next phase in their scouting
careers.
Our Troop sponsors Pinewood Derby races for Packs. We have a
very modern track with all the bells and whistles that Cub Scouts
enjoy when racing. We also participate in a Webelos Campout
at Brazos Bend once a year. This program works with the
leaders and the scouts in achieving 3 Webelos activity badges
while at camp. We also chair Pushmobile and participate
heavily with this event.

DOES
your pack or den need some help?
Our
Troop has many leaders that have been in Cub Scout Packs or are
currently in Cub Scout Packs as well. We have a tremendous
resource that we are willing to share with any Cub Scout unit that
would like a helping hand.
Just contact us and we will see what we can do for
you.

Every
Troop in the Districts around us do similar things. Some are
water based, some are climbing, hiking or even backpacking based
type Troops. Our Troop does a great job of mixing the best
of everything all together.
Our scouts choose our program every year for where we camp and
what we get to do. Just one look at our calendar and you
will see that we really do have a little bit of everything for the
scouts to do. Another thing that we do in our Troop, is
allow the scouts to have campfires at all our campouts. We
learned a long time ago in our Troop, that at a campfire, this is
where the scouts really get to know their patrol and Troop members
and really have a good time together. This is a key
ingredient in getting scouts to Eagle rank.

What kind of fundraisers do you do
We
work with the traditional fundraisers put on by Council.
Popcorn and Scout Fair Ticket Sales. By utilizing these
fundraisers, we help to also support scouting within our
Council.
We also have garage sales and we currently are handling
concessions at Pushmobile 2011.
With over 75% to 100% of the profits going into the Scout's
personal Troop account, this allows for the scouts to raise their
own money for their own scouting program. This helps
to cover the regular camping plus the summer and winter
camps. A scout is Thrifty!

Scouting Scoop!
As the Troop evolves, so does our information. For your convenience
and personal records, the Troop will be setting up advancement records on
the web. These will all be in a secure folder for each scout.
A scouting family will ONLY be able to see their own scout's
records. We will try and keep these files as up to date as
possible. Keep in mind, that our original records are kept with the
Advancements chairperson. What you see on the web may not reflect
the latest information, but pretty darn close! You can check your records OR Troop e-mail by clicking on
one of the two links below the Sam Houston Area Council patch at the top
of the page. Don't have a Troop e-mail address or access to your
advancements? Then contact Brad Gilless at bradg@t87.org.
